Docly Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 (edited) Click The first of three announcements set to take place this week. It wouldn't surprise me if it resembled Big Picture Mode to an extent. Edited September 27, 2013 by Dr Mitchell Quote
Luvandpower Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Sounds awesome but I probably won't use until further testing has been done on it ( when it comes out and the public gives a large amount of testing for it ) Quote
Army of One Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 (edited) I wonder if this Operating System will become hugely popular and begin to take over the more popular ones. We'll have to wait and see on more of the details, and see how well they manage to broadcast this out to the public / people who would love to download this. Gary Oak Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 (edited) I believe the next announcement is the Steam console (Project "Steam Box" will finally become official). If you look at the main website, the icons are like this (using numbers to represent the icon, dashes for the space): [1- ] [ -1] [1+1] Either the end result or the next announcement has to/will be Steam's console. Anyways, can't wait to see footage of the OS in action and how it is setup. Edited September 24, 2013 by Gary Oak Quote
Egghebrecht Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 steam box plox!!!! seriously I would love that and buy certainly Quote

I'm pretty sure this will be a strictly gaming OS with other basic functionality (such as media viewing and Internet browsing) so it definitely won't become the main distro of choice for people. It will hopefully spur devs to start porting games to Linux though. Quote
Egghebrecht Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 what it will mainly do is lower the artificially high prices for console games because that's what this thing represents, a console with games at a pc price at the same time it will nibble at base on which windows OS keeps it market share namely beign the OS that runs your games and your office applications both functions it is now slowly losing to the competition making place for other OS companies who focus non gaming OS (google, mac, linux) Quote
reepicheep Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 I'll certainly not give up my PC for a Steambox, I think - I like having just one non-mobile device. SteamOS is really cool, but I've found that I definitely can only live with one OS on my PC at a time (ie. I really enjoy using Linux for anything that isn't gaming, but having to switch back and forth is too inconvenient). My only worry is that in ten years or so, I won't be able to play my Windows games. But then again, it ten years or so, PCs in general probably wouldn't have an issue virtualising Windows and playing games. This is pretty exciting. Quote
thepope1322 Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 The point of the Steambox is not to replace PCs, but to gain new customers by venturing into the console market. Quote
Gary Oak Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 The point of the Steambox is not to replace PCs, but to gain new customers by venturing into the console market. Its also to provide an easier way to access multiple games and eliminate the need for discs. I mean, thats the new thing nowadays is to download it, not purchase a hard copy. hence why Microsoft's Xbox One was originally going to be a console in which you would want to download games, rather than have the hard copy. Personally, I still want a hard copy, but I'm starting to see the ease of access to a game if you purchase it and download it on the spot. Quote
O hai im KAMIL Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 This should be renamed to Steam discussion thread. 2nd announcement is up, Steam Machines. Few details so far, but basically there will be multiple configurations to choose from and they will be running SteamOS. Quote

O hai im KAMIL Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Predictions for the final announcement? Source 2.0 I'd say, along with Half-Life 3, Team Fortress 3 and Portal 3; all running natively on the Steam Machine running the SteamOS! Okay the last part is just wishful thinking but Source 2 is a possibility. Quote

Docly Posted September 26, 2013 Author Posted September 26, 2013 . Of course seeing as we are talking about episode 3, we just keep delaying it. In seriousness, if its not Source 2, or new games; I have a strange feeling it will be a controller to go with it. I mean, take a look at the day 3 icon, which may or may not resemble an owl. Reminds me of a controller with the o+o. Quote
O hai im KAMIL Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Controllers suck for PC gaming (excluding a select few genres) and everyone knows it so I don't see it being a controller. Quote

It'll help console gamers transition into PC gaming no doubt, however the keyboard and mouse are a core strength of PC gaming and taking that away would be a bad idea. Quote

If you want. But Steam and SteamOS work well with gamepads, too. Stay tuned, though - we have some more to say very soon on the topic of input. Edited September 27, 2013 by Egghebrecht Quote

I'd hardly say a select few genres. If it requires careful aiming and/or a large amount of keys, controllers are not ideal. Otherwise, I think they're generally fine. Especially considering that a lot of games were made for consoles anyway, meaning that it supports a controller just fine. Edited September 27, 2013 by reepicheep Quote
