AMD R9 290X Launches - 9% faster than GTX 780 & $100 cheaper

Getting down to business then, AMD has clearly positioned the 290X as a price/performance monster, and while that’s not the be all and end all of evaluating video cards it’s certainly going to be the biggest factor to most buyers. To that end at 2560x1440 – what I expect will be the most common resolution used with such a card for the time being – AMD is essentially tied with GTX Titan, delivering an average of 99% of the performance of NVIDIA’s prosumer-level flagship. Against NVIDIA’s cheaper and more gaming oriented GTX 780 that becomes an outright lead, with the 290X leading by an average of 9% and never falling behind the GTX 780.

The 290X is faster and cheaper than the GTX 780 and is very, very close to the GTX Titan (which costs nearly double the price). Buy this with a 1440p monitor or two and you're going to game like a boss, very awesome stuff from AMD. It does get very hot, uses quite a bit of power and noisy though once the fan starts going, but hopefully the non-reference coolers by other vendors will circumvent this.

It gets very close to the GTX Titan when the 290X is heavily overclocked and the GTX Titan is running normally. That being said, this is awesome. Still expensive, but awesome.

I'm hoping to get the 280x with my new system. But if I had more money... ;P

 

It does look very good. AMD has some great prices - I was originally aiming for the GTX 770, but the 280x is like £80 cheaper - can't really pass that up.

Reference board is 10.5"/267mm long, non-reference cards which should be released end of November will probably be a bit longer.

It gets very close to the GTX Titan when the 290X is heavily overclocked and the GTX Titan is running normally. That being said, this is awesome. Still expensive, but awesome.

 

No, it gets very close (even beating it in some cases) at stock clocks compared to the Titan. Good luck trying to overclock this thing on air with a reference board, you won't be able to get much out of it. And it's not expensive, it's so damn cheap for the amount of performance you get.

The card that's been going around is a reference card, straight from AMD. It is meant to just go at stock speeds and does it fine enough. When the other companies like PowerColor and stuff get the card, they can factory overclock and put custom coolers on it. You spend more on these, but then can overclock it further yourself.

 

290x looks great, glad they delivered such a solid product at a low price point.

Loving the price on this card, especially since I'm looking for a new one. Might have to consider getting this instead of the Titan.
