My friends knew I played, however they all believed I stopped when they did, which was after eighth grade. I continued playing until around sophomore year though, just never mentioning it. I feared being teased by it, and already being sort of on the outskirts of my social circle, I was in a more protective mode. Now, if I was still playing, I wouldn't care so much.

That stereotype you mention is interesting, and rather true. Runescape is in actuality, a difficult game to really accomplish or become great at; it requires hours of dedication and training to complete quests and gain skills to respectable levels. I would look at this rather as a issue of personal time consumption; older people may become more into the game and thus spend more time playing, allowing it to take over a major part of their schedule. That would be the only risk, the greater attention span than that of a thirteen year old.

Most of my friends know I played Runescape, and my close friends know the ridiculous amount of time I've spent on the game. Only my closest two friends know that I currently still play. It's not something I usually divulge with friends or acquaintances when talking about video games.
