Question

Posted (edited)

Hiya. I'm new to the forums so sorry if this is in the wrong spot, but I would like to know what the best way to train smithing is, as I would like to not have to buy my armour and weapons, but instead make them. So if anyone can help me, thank you. Currently my smithing level is 37. I'm a f2p'er

If you're a member, doing wilderness warbands every day can yield large XP gains for little money.

Thanks and I'll be sure to try that when I get membership but I'm currently not a member. :(

Yeh when you're a member that's pretty good exp! And this is the correct subforum to post in btw ;).

Hmm at 37 smith i'd suggest doing cheapest gp/exp, what's your current goal?

I think a pretty decent method for f2p would be steel bars. If money isn't an option tho I would recommend faster exp like iron pl8 bodies/ steel nails, but it's hard for the sell back on those.

Steel bars almost profit i think?

Firstly, make sure you've done Knight's Sword - EASY experience.

I think at your level, it might be best for you to Superheat while mining coal/iron - this trains your mining and magic while you're there, and makes you some money (which you'll probably use at higher levels).

Otherwise, I think burial armour is an option to you. Certainly, once you're high enough to do Mithril II armour, do that - it's the best rate/xp ratio there, and is what I did to 90... though that might require P2P.

I'm aiming to get 99 so I can make my own armour from now on, (rune, addy, mithril) and I need 68 for a lumbridge task. I'll try this method. Thanks!

I haven't done Knight's Sword I've been meaning to for a while, and I'm guessing you mean the armour at the artisan workshop?

I'd strongly recommend doing the artisans workshop railway building thing, as it's free. It is underground beneath the burial armor area (the east end of the workshop). You could make steel items too, but unless you are wealthy I wouldn't do that. I don't know xp rates for that, but you won't have to spend time making money to fund your training so it can't be too bad overall. At a higher level, making iron ceremonial armor is the most economical choice and gives moderate experience. You might want to mine the iron yourself because chances are you'll want to train mining at some point or another anyways.

I would recommend against trying to smith your own armor because getting to 99 will take a long time and will also be very expensive (you will probably be able to buy very many rune sets with the money it takes you to get to 99). However, Jagex has mentioned that they are thinking about scaling smithing differently and making rune start at 50, which makes your plan much easier.

I was unaware of the mention of smithing scaling, so thank you for telling me about that. And yes it does make my plan easier, but I just want to be able to make my own armour, so that if the G.E was non-existant, I wouldn't be dying every time that someone attacked me. I want to try a runescape 'career' without buying from the grand exchange.

You are going to find that having a successful rugged individual account is almost impossible, particularly when you get to higher levels. For example, the better weapons out there (tier 70+) come from high level slayer monsters and bosses. You will have to kill these high level monsters to do this, and if you are killing these monsters with equipment you either made or came across you will have much trouble.

Many people do have a limited interaction with the Grand Exchange, but going GE sober will be much harder than expected. It is a nice idea though.

I've done gold bars/gauntlets at edge for years but i have learned there are more effective ways to train now post EoC. I read that Superheat is rather useful now and that one may actually achieve 99 smith and magic without ever leaving the bank. My suggestion is do a combination of things, smith cannon balls if you use a cannon. Do a bit of artisan's here and there. Superheat some items. It's one of the harder xp grinds, the gain is slow and the cost is ridiculous. :P Good luck!

Speaking as someone who got 60+ stats in f2p (including Runecrafting before RuneSpan)

The best way at level 37 in my opinion is to make steel bars for money. Trust me, in later levels fast xp will really, really be expensive. It's best to make some profit now while you can, and steel bars is also decent xp.

If you insist on getting maximum xp per hour, then I suggest you look into superheating, which also provides magic experience, and burial armour. Note that both these methods would save you quite some time- it's a requirement for the Completionist's Cape to have 100% respect at the Artisan's Workshop, and you'll also be getting competitive magic experience while superheating. It's even profitable at times.

Any questions, feel free to message me here or in game, my username is "Renegaderp"

Cheers!
