Before alching, it was all from monster drops. After alching, well... I don't have enough knowledge of the current game to remember anymore. But that's how a lot of the initial money came from anyway.

GP and money drains are pretty interesting. Lots of GP comes from task rewards, shop selling, SOF bags, etc. as well as alching/monster drops.

Big money drains include armor repairs, the well thing, shop buying, yada yada. I would have liked to seen the economy at the start of Runescape. The start of Runescape 07 (which is the closest thing I witnessed to that) had a very unstable economy due to things like lack of GP. People often had to trade things, like cooked chickens for iron swords.

The money supply in Runescape is sort of an interesting topic. During the period between the removal of the Wilderness and its reintroduction, there was a large amount of inflation because people would 20/20 (I think that's what it was called, it was abusing the PvP rewards system) and get statuettes as drops, which would be traded for large amounts of cash. This greatly increased the amount of coins in circulation, resulting in a significant amount of inflation. I complained about this system a lot because as a freeplayer most of my wealth was in coins and not items, so the inflation greatly decreased my purchasing power. I could have bought stuff to compensate, and I did this to a limited extent, but I couldn't find any great items to do this with (there is no equivalent of real life gold in Runescape).

There also seems to be a lot of inflation with today's Runescape, as the cost of many items (especially raw materials) has skyrocketed. I think this has more to do with the decrease in freeplayers and bots, which would normally get these things. But I don't know much about Runescape these days so I may be wrong.

Anyways, cash comes in through monster drops, alching, tasks, etc and leaves through shops, saw mill, armor repairs, etc.

How about, RuneScape lore-wise, where did gp come from? Or rather, when did gp "start?"

Gp is gold pieces and I would assume it's not a minted currency since it is accepted virtually everywhere even places that have no contact with the rest of society. This leads me to believe it's just small chunks of the metal and nothing more, so I doubt there is any lore to it besides that people place a value on gold.

Thank you guys for your replies, because I really had the least of clues in my mind as to where it all could have came from :P. I totally forgot they even had an alching spell in the game LOL. Let's keep the responses going guys :D

The question of "Where did the GP come lore wise" is likely something Andrew Gower did not think of much when he made the game. Sand Nagger's idea makes the most sense, however if this were the case then we would be able to make our own gold out of gold bars, which is not *directly* the case.

I don't know why the word "gp" stuck. They are named and were always named "coins".

With the removal of PvP Statuettes and the change of Coinshare mechanics, the majority of the coins in the game now come from Alching.

Speaking of which, I am in possession of a potential 1 billion coins, which will be put into circulation when these battlestaffs inevitably get alched (most likely not by myself though).

Thats a lot of gold, but probably also a fair amount was sunk from the game by players purchasing those from Zaff as well, so its only going to slightly re-inflate the game.
