zybez shuts down their fansite

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately its not far wrong, theres still a few of us RSfansites hanging on, but the updates are fewer & less regular as time goes by.

the "???"wiki is the trend for most games guides and communities, at least for now, give it a few years and something else will come along.

Damn, Zybez and W13 have been around forever. At least Runescape Community / Zybez forums is still around.

Sad as this is nostalgia-wise, this doesn't come as much of a shock. Quite frankly I'm surprised Sal's is even pushing out new content. That's not to say our content is bad (I think it's arguably better than the wiki because it's more organic, and not as mechanical or generic as the guides on the wiki are) but I just don't see people turning to fansites anymore when the top results are almost always a wiki page.

Glad their forums are still around, that will persist for a while longer yet, just like it has here :)

Slightly different for Zybez because they are a company and require money. I do agree that fansites like this aren't really working compared to the way of a wiki. But I also think that's because nobody updated with the times.

If you made a social media platform for Runescape where you can share videos and pictures and have a community I think it would do a lot better. But the issue is exactly like they said. The RS wiki allowed for thousands of people to update guides and other things and it's all in one place. That's not being done (at least well anyway). With the diminished user-base of Runescape, you need something that everyone is going to use if you want to have a busy successful website.

It's just like when your local shops shut down because the big supermarket moved in.

Wait, what's the difference between Zybez and Zybez forums?

I assume it means they'll stop adding RS guides+tips but keep the forums open so people in the community can still chill. It's pretty much what would happen here if Sobend, Army, etc. just stopped doing the guides, but the forums would still be up/run for those of us sticking around.

Unless Sal comes out of retirement and shuts it down.

Then we're all boned.

Initially surprised but not really. Even back in the day Zybez guides weren't all that popular, it was Runescape Community that made Zybez. Runescape Community is still fairly active and the home of the main clan scene, so it is probably sticking around for at least a couple more years. This is the first of the major fansites to shut down though. Bummer.

When I was playing RuneScape a lot I really depended on Sal's, Zybez, etc for help. I never really cottoned on to the official Wiki or official quest guides, since I've always been a freeplayer. By the time the Jagex-approved ones were published, I had finished nearly all of the quests available to me. Reading about other parts of gameplay is always interesting, but the quest help was always the most vital.

I think it's important to have multiple fan sites up and running, because while none of them have a designated "house style", different guides give different insights into to different skills and activities.

I'm not really fond of the internet going towards the way of subbreddits/wiki's it takes the customization out of the platform. It's like going from Windows to a stripped-down Mac that everyone can edit.

Personally, I am still much more fond of fansites and such.

Reading guides from fansites feels much more, I dunno, personal? It's like reading an amazing book vs. reading the terms and conditions.

That was a pretty rubbish analogy but you get me.

Finally noticed this but damn that hit me in the feels pretty bad. I always thought they were one of the larger ones and they couldn't fail. Then again, I've heard that back in 2008 and look at what happened to the financial market.
