How do you feel about how Jagex treat Runescape?

Recommended Posts

Let's go through the news and updates recently.

  • RS Mobile, fairly exciting, will bring more players in hopefully.
  • RuneFest Theme, so not a game update, a convention.
  • RunePass - Oceans Bounty, cosmetic items available.
  • Boneyard - Treasure Hunter.
  • Temple of Aminishi Elite Dungeon - that's great for elite players i guess.
  • Mysteria, oh more treasure hunter.
  • In game calendar - How exciting :xd:
  • Summer Pinatas - More treasure hunter BS
  • SGS Summer sale & jester pack, BUY OUR COSMETIC ITEMS GUYS.
  • Hall Of Memories, levelling divination in a new area, alright for some.
  • Supernova - Treasure hunter bs again.
  • It's carnival time, go and spend money at solomons store guys.

So of that we have 7 of 12 updates being treasure hunter cash grabs.

1 update being a major addition, with Runescape Mobile.

1 thing about a convention most of the player base wont be going to.

3 game updates and whilst some are interesting, they add very little to the game and do not inspire new players to want to get involved.

I hate to say it, but Jagex really don't give people many reasons to care about the game. Where is the fresh new content that people can enjoy, where is the fun and relatable stuff? Where is it all, what the hell is Jagex working on that gives the players a more fun and exciting experience. No i don't want to purchase more cosmetics, no i don't want to look at your micro transaction rubbish. Give me proper gameplay, fun enjoyable content and stop cash grabbing every single penny.

Runescape 3 has a lot fewer players than it used to be and naturally is going to have fewer developers.  This is probably something to expect now that only ~30k players are playing rs3 at any one time.

I dunno, I saw 96k last night, currently there is 50k playing with 36k playing old school.

I don't know that taking people off of development of content of your game is entirely the best way to keep people playing in the long term.

I think those numbers are mixed up. OSRS almost always has more players than RS3 now. There is some nice bar graph that illustrates it; I'll find it.

I hate how they're trying to extract money out of RS3 like crazy. Seems that they are prioritizing that over number of players now because the amount of RS3 players is dropping and they keep moving forward. And then they're removing Classic a month from today.

Here is the bar graph: http://www.misplaceditems.com/rs_tools/graph/

Yeah... following what Sobend said, I think OSRS is the future of Runescape's player base.  I never thought I would be saying that 4 years ago, but a lot has changed since then.  There are going to be fewer substantial updates for RS3 from now on, especially considering those tend to be more expensive than the OSRS updates.

It should not be too surprising though, is it? JaGEx's decline started after the shart turn-around that JaGEx did to first combat bots, then tried to appeal to new players by modernising in tune with how games evolved. What JaGEx apparently failed to realise though, was why people was playing the game in the first place. I have no idea how they have fared for the past 5-8 years in that regard, but that raises an interesting question:

Does JaGEx have a plan for the game going forward, especially light of the dichotomy of OSRS and RS3?

You put the mistake of EOC pretty well put. Jagex is making a new MMORPG which is supposed to be "Runescape Remastered" or at least that is what is rumored. We'll see if they try to find a perfect balance between old and new.

It is interesting to hear that they want to make another RuneScape, so I guess they have not completely given up then.

The way I saw it, RuneScape 2 was great for me, because it was something you could play on any PC, you could easily multi-task, and it had a simple yet complex scope to it. The entire no-trade and no-PVP focus as of 2007, furthered by the changes to the actual mechanics in Evolution of Combat, just changed RuneScape into something that never appeals to me. It is a watered down MMORPG that is trying to be something it cannot be.

Truth is, if the game had been like it was before the Grand Exchange and all that, I would have at least played RuneScape on and off while watching TV shows and stuff like that. As it was, they killed what I liked in favour of improving the game, and it was not for me anymore. The irony is, if I went back to OSRS, I would probably enjoy it. My issue is that I would have to start all over again, and for a player with a character that was mostly active during the OSRS days, it is frustrating that I could not transfer my account into OSRS (as far as I know). :/

I had the same fear but as soon as I started Skilling a bit I got addicted again. I left the day of RS3 release and I still have never logged in to rs3. I have a Max combat account with a few other 99s in it so I feel the pain of having to do things over again in 07 but at the same time it's almost nostalgic to train and I still get that Rush getting levels again. Restarting really sucks but once I started playing I couldn't stop. The mobile release has really helped. I can play Anywhere which makes it really easy. It's nice to be able to skill while on lunch break.

I probably would have started OSRS if I could play it on my tablet without having an active subscription running. It is not a money thing. I have money, and judging by the grand exchange, I am well into the double digits in terms of billions of gold. It is more the principle of things, not wanting to make the commitment for something I am slightly nostalgical curious about, even if I have no time in my life, and a ton of quality games to play if I want to have fun while gaming. I can see myself doing some light gaming for fun, but.. not if I have to pay for it, and not while using my actual gaming PC.

I would imagine they are keeping it P2P at the moment to not have disasters occuring when throwaway accounts can freely exploit inevitable bugs and what not. It would be a huge opportunity lost if they do not open it for F2P players, as that could easily draw attention back to the game.
