She died peacefully on Thursday afternoon at her Scottish estate, where she had spent much of the summer. The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change. Her son King Charles III said the death of his beloved mother was a "moment of great sadness" for him and his family and that her loss would be "deeply felt" around the world. He said: "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. "I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world." During the coming period of mourning, he said he and his family would be "comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held". The King and his wife, Camilla, now Queen Consort, will return to London on Friday, Buckingham Palace said. Senior royals had gathered at Balmoral after the Queen's doctors became concerned about her health earlier in the day. All the Queen's children travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision. Some speculated that the photos with Liz Truss and Boris Johnson happened a while ago. Which I thought was interesting. The last photo of her, on her own there with a black hand and dark eyes was enough for me to say she's not got long left. It's a weird time, I'm not upset by her passing, she was 96 and yet it doesn't feel quite right. For me it's not grief, it's this odd confusion and perhaps fear. Yuanrang 405 Posted September 19, 2022 There certainly is a level of commitment to a role that goes above and beyond what should be expected of anyone. I feel the same way about my King. I do not support the monarchy, but it is hard to not support and respect a Monarch that puts the people and nation above themselves. Imagine the stability she provided for an empire and a nation in a Century shaped by radical changes and advancements. It is probably quite easy to forget how she unified more than she were divisive. gazisere 6 Posted September 20, 2022 You are absolutely correct - 70 years in any role would be an absolute achievement. To be in the spotlight constantly for that amount of time is beyond comprehension. The people and sights she must have seen along the way must be phenomenal - and to take the monarchy from our old past and develop it in such a way to make it relevant to today's modern world whilst making it look easy... What an absolute mammoth of a task. I don't think people really did appreciate the consistency and stability that she provided until she had gone. It was all the other countries / provinces where she served / serves as head of state I disliked the colonial nature of the British crown, but I also hate living in a country with a Royal Family. I left the UK for a bunch of other countries and ended up in another stupid monarchy. Republicanism is not huge in the UK, but it is still floating about.
