Does anyone still play?

So, seems strange to ask this on a RuneScape fan site but, does anyone still actively play?

What version, if so?

I tried to give OSRS a go personally but after the amount of time that I had put into my account back in the day - I can never see myself starting again.

I still play RuneScape 3 maybe three hours a week. I do not play Old School for the reason you note, and I get a “been there, done that” feeling with the stuff I actually did in 2005-07. I also dislike some of the changes they’ve made in old school. The only thing that might bring me back is the clan scene, but I don’t know anyone in a clan anymore.

I sort of wanted to go back to Old School, but I quickly realised that I had only played Old School RuneScape, and besides trying the start of RuneScape 3, I do not want to level a whole new account again. I do not have interest in that.

...and quite frankly, RuneScape 3 is not a good enough game to warrant my time to be something I focus on. At least with Old School, I could have lazily played on a different monitor, but.. yeah. RuneScape 3 does not have much of an appeal to me, sadly.

To be honest, I did give RS3 a go for a while but there is so much to learn again, it's like I have fallen too far behind. (Albeit that I did make the effort to achieve 99 Archeology & 99 Divination)

Sounds like OSRS has gone very much the same way!

Yep, completely with you there. It's a whole different ball game in the gaming scene these days!

Far too easy to to jump into Warzone on PS5.

I renew a couple times a year, and it's usually OSRS that sucks me in. Just too much has changed in in RS3 for me to be captivated by it, and my old achievements feel devalued when I open 2 free keys and get 200k exp for doing nothing.

Ugh, I know that feeling! So much hard work for nothing!

Have you been doing anything specific on OSRS? Like PKing? Or is that even still a thing?

Ironically, I watched a tile challenge series on Youtube about OSRS, and that seemed amazingly fun, so on one level, I would like to off-monitor play OSRS, but.. I do not see the joy of beginning again from scratch. I have too many great memories attached to the first account.

Oh well.

I pop in on RS3 sometimes for my quarterly "old man yells at cloud" where I complain about how much has changed

I feel like a lot of people log in now and again just to check on their account and see how things look... Imagine if it was timed correctly and suddenly it was busy again, Sal's clan chat was full, the forums suddenly became active..... Ah, I can but dream!

I love how everyone knows how much time and effort they have put into an account and just know that they never will be able to move on from that account...

Free time is certainly more valuable as we all grow older!

I mainly play RS3 since I'm going for 200M in All Skills on my Main, going for another 1B Cooking & Prayer Exp in F2P.

I want to get 200M Firemaking, Fletching & Cooking on OSRS & get All 99s.

Tileman? (Oh, or was it the one-episode fog one?) If you haven't seen the Swampletics series, that's almost as enjoyable if a little bit more drawn out and episodic - I was encouraged to finish it by a barista wearing a Swampletics hat. Ha

I'm the same, I'd far rather watch someone play the game and give their (humorous) thoughts, but I did spent a month or two last year (two years ago?) doing farm runs on oldschool and trying to quest without guides. I think if I didn't have the initial friend group playing oldschool I probably wouldn't have started all over again, but it is a good bit of fun knowing I could go AFK monkfish if I wanted to scratch that itch again

I definitely had the "but, I did that already, why would I do it again?" mentality going in but I enjoyed leveling up way more the second time around. I dunno, 12 year old me may have gotten 1900 total but 28 year old me found it just as/maybe more edifying (or fun/interesting, whatever's appropriate for video games now)

You are quite right. I came across the McTileman series by Settled, and I found that incredibly interesting to the point that I actually watch each new episode as they are released. It did indeed lead to me watching the Swampletics series, which I found highly entertaining even if a bit insane. I would say that Settled overdo things sometimes in terms of how he narrates the episode, but as a whole, it was an enjoyable watch while working on other projects.

I think what restricts me is that I feel that I have very little spare time to play a specific video game a lot, so that dampens my urge to go on a major grind on a game I am mentally "done" with. For the most part, I obtained everything I ever wanted in RuneScape when I was an active player, so there is precious reason to go back. I say that, but if I could go back to the old social experience I had with all the amazing people I met over the years, I would probably go back in a heartbeat. The power of nostalgia and fond memories are just too strong.
