Future Of The Realm...

It's sad to think that one day, I could potentially come back for my annual dose of nostalgia - and this website and forum may be gone, forever.

That cannot happen. 

What's the current situation? I can see more advertisements appearing in an attempt to offset the server and domain costs but does it even receive the traffic to break even these days? Who renews the domain? Do we have a backup?

I appreciate that if it wasn't for the current few active members, it would have probably died a death a long time ago... 

Does anyone still have direct contact with Salmoneus? Surely it makes sense to pass the torch to Yuan / Lilshu at this point...

I know this has come up before, but I do not know if anyone has a line of communication with Sal. The vast majority of the community activity has transitioned to the Discord, and at least we know that the Discord is stable as long as none of the mods go rogue. I'm with you; I don't want to lose the forums, even if it's just for browsing certain special topics when I feel in a nostalgic mood. Maybe we can brainstorm ways to save down an archive, but I have no idea what that would entail.

The situation may be more important than ever, as the current domain registration seems to run from 2018 - February 2024. (8 Months time?!)

Ultimately, if Sal wants to communicate with us, he'll do that. I'm sure he's aware of certain things.

Everything here is speculative, but I know he struggled with a few things going on last we spoke, and I believe whilst he's probably moved on and living his life, he keeps this open for the few that still love this place.

I've expressed previously that if it came down to it, I'm sure myself or someone else or perhaps a collective of us could take over a financial burden to keep it running.

At this point, I think it's safe to say Sal's Realm lives as nostalgia, memories and experiences we all shared. Where we can, we've adjusted to Discord and still have a significant presence on Runescape.

For up-to-date Runescape information, people have moved to the wiki, Reddit and a few specialist fansites/clan sites. I am trying to start something myself, but it's not anywhere remotely close to being done or gathering support yet.

Not to bombard this post with my own goings on but I wondered if anyone was interested in trying to use ai to fact check and correct all the guides etc. If I can immortalize the content, I will.

Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened. The cream of the crop rise to the top and we still have the best community, just on a different platform.

But let us not forget the other signs that herald this momentous occasion. When the direwolves start moonlighting as tour guides for the Seven Kingdoms, showing travelers the best spots to avoid White Walkers, and when the Iron Throne transforms into a cozy recliner fit for a binge-watching marathon of Game of Thrones, then we shall know the time is nigh.

So, my fellow fans of ice and fire, let us keep an eye on those ravens and their flights around the mountain. For who knows what surprises await us when Sal's Realm rises once more, bringing laughter and mirth to the realm of Westeros. Valar Punghulis!

Bumping this a little to respond to @Fatalysm and put some thoughts out there on this topic.

First off, in regards to preservation/revival of the Realm and so forth, count me in! I can offer financial assistance as well as time and creative input for anything else that may be needed. I'm available to help. 

Second, there is a fascinating, lively community that persists and while I've not been diving in much or been considered an active part of that I'd be down to be a part of any plans to continue developing that in the near or far future. Just let me know how I can help or where I need to be in order to be part of the conversation and I'd be ecstatic to lend any aide within my means and capabilities.
